Coolie Box Office Collection Day 8: Rajinikanth’s Magnum Opus Records Third Biggest Opening Week After 2.0 and Jailer

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Coolie has wrapped up its extended 8-day opening week run at the Indian box office. The action-packed entertainer started off with earth-shattering numbers but lost pace too quickly, resulting in collections that could not surpass the benchmarks set by 2.0 and Jailer.

A Record Start, But a Slippery Slope

Thanks to massive pre-release hype and advance bookings, Coolie shattered records on day one with ₹65 crore – Rajinikanth’s biggest-ever opener. However, mixed reviews and uneven word-of-mouth pulled it down right from the weekend.

By Monday (day 5), the film managed just ₹12 crore – considered the litmus test day at the box office – and the downward trend continued in weekdays.

Comparison with Rajinikanth’s Past Blockbusters

Despite a superb kickstart, Coolie ended with only the third biggest opening week of Rajinikanth’s career in India, behind:

  1. 2.0 (2018) – ₹303.25 crore
  2. Jailer (2023) – ₹235.85 crore
  3. Coolie (2025) – ₹229.75 crore

This shows that the film, while a major success, did not match the gigantic scale of 2.0 or the storm created by Jailer.

Audience & Trade Reactions

While Coolie remains a big hit in Tamil Nadu and strong in South markets, the film’s mixed reception, especially in Hindi belts, restricted its growth. Trade experts believe the film had the potential to cross ₹250–270 crore in week one alone, but it fell short due to lack of repeat audiences.

At ₹229.75 crore net in 8 days, Coolie is yet another proof of Rajinikanth’s enduring star power – but also a reminder that big openings need sustained word-of-mouth to maintain momentum. For now, the film has to depend on its second-week performance to maintain strong profitability.
