Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR’s War 2, both released simultaneously on August 14, have been locked in a fierce box office battle. Coolie directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj features superstar Rajinikanth along with Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Shruti Haasan, and others, adding to its star-studded appeal. Meanwhile, War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Yash Raj Films, highlights Jr NTR as the antagonist opposite Hrithik Roshan, making it a highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Coolie witnessed a steep decline on the sixth day (Tuesday) till 2 pm, earning just ₹2.72 crore across all language versions. Despite this drop, the film successfully crossed the ₹200 crore net mark, taking its total to a strong ₹209.37 crore. This marks the lowest single-day earning for Coolie so far but it still holds a comfortable lead over War 2.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, War 2 also experienced a significant dip on its sixth day till 2 pm, grossing ₹2.42 crore across all languages, marking its lowest day at the box office since release. Up to August 19, War 2 has earned approximately ₹185.67 crore. The decline continues the downward trend seen since Monday, indicating struggles to maintain early momentum.
In Coolie, Rajinikanth plays the main protagonist, while Nagarjuna portrays Simon, the antagonist. The film also features Aamir Khan in a surprise cameo along with Shruti Haasan, Upendra, and Soubin Shahir. Nagarjuna has expressed pride in the positive reception the film has received and described it as a celebration of legacy and reinvention.
War 2 revolves around Kabir Dhaliwal, a secret agent accused of betraying the nation, and Vikram, his former batchmate, who is tasked with tracking him down. The film stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR in lead roles, supported by Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, and Anil Kapoor. With an estimated budget between ₹300-400 crore, War 2 is one of the biggest Indian productions this year.
