Rajinikanth’s Coolie and the much-hyped Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR starrer War 2 completed their first week at the box office. Released on August 14 (Independence Day weekend), both films crossed the ₹200 crore mark domestically. However, compared to their huge budgets and the tsunami created recently by Saiyaara, the films have underperformed.

Breaking Down the Box Office Numbers

  • War 2 earned ₹204.25 crore (week one domestic).
  • Coolie collected ₹229.75 crore, becoming Rajinikanth’s biggest opener till date.

While War 2 opened strongly at ₹29 crore on day one (Hindi), Independence Day saw collections touch ₹44 crore. However, the film’s graph dipped sharply afterwards due to average word-of-mouth.
Meanwhile, Coolie dominated in Tamil Nadu but struggled in the Hindi belt despite Rajinikanth’s star power.

Why the Clash Affected Both Films

Trade expected the Coolie vs War 2 clash to divide business — and that is exactly what happened. Two big projects, headlined by icons of South and Bollywood, could not sustain momentum.

Taran Adarsh’s Strong Verdict

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said bluntly:

  • War 2 is a flop. It’s the first flop from YRF Spy Universe.
  • He further added that while Coolie fared decently in Tamil markets, it could not penetrate pan-India.
  • On content, he stated, “War 2 is very weak. Content always makes the difference.

Did Saiyaara Overshadow Them?

A major factor behind comparisons is the Saiyaara storm. Released on July 18, the romantic drama became the highest-earning love story in Hindi cinema history, enjoying two free weeks at the box office. It even outperformed big-ticket films like Housefull 5 (₹183 cr), Raid 2 (₹173 cr) and Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par (₹163 cr).

While Taran Adarsh believes Saiyaara itself slowed after Mahavatar Narsimha hit screens, its record run highlighted the importance of fresh storytelling over big budgets.

About the Films

  • Coolie (Dir: Lokesh Kanagaraj): Rajinikanth’s 171st film with Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, plus cameo by Aamir Khan. Produced by Sun Pictures.
  • War 2 (Dir: Ayan Mukerji): Sequel to the 2019 hit. Stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR in their first collaboration, with Kiara Advani in a key role. Part of YRF Spy Universe, produced by Yash Raj Films.

Final Word

Both Coolie and War 2 may look impressive on paper with ₹200-crore-plus openings. But industry experts stress that content-driven cinema like Saiyaara is setting the standard. Star power alone, as the first week results show, is not enough to guarantee a “tsunami” at the box office anymore.
