In a surprising yet calculated move, Ajay Devgn’s upcoming comedy sequel Son Of Sardaar 2 has officially postponed its theatrical release. Initially scheduled to arrive on July 25, the film will now hit cinemas on August 1, as confirmed by trade analyst Taran Adarsh. While no official reason was given, the timing of this shift coincides with the overwhelming box office response to Saiyaara.
Saiyaara’s Impactful Opening
Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara, starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, opened with a thunderous ₹21.25 crore on its first day (July 18), setting the tone for what could be one of the most successful romantic dramas of the year. The film has generated exceptional buzz, driven by fresh casting, emotional storytelling, and a powerful music album backed by Yash Raj Films.
The industry was taken by surprise with such strong numbers, and with the film expected to continue this streak over the weekend, any new release would face serious competition for audience attention and screen space.
A Strategic Move For Son Of Sardaar 2
Unlike its predecessor, Son Of Sardaar 2 hasn’t garnered the same level of anticipation. The trailer release and promotional activity have been relatively low-key. Given that the original Son Of Sardaar (2012) had to face a tough clash with Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan, this delay seems to be a conscious attempt to avoid history repeating itself.
In 2012, Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar opened at ₹10.72 crore, while Jab Tak Hai Jaan opened at ₹15 crore. Despite both films entering the ₹100 crore club, the SRK starrer earned ₹120.65 crore, overshadowing Devgn’s ₹105.03 crore.
YRF vs Ajay Devgn – Round Two?
This isn’t the first time that Yash Raj Films and Ajay Devgn’s production have crossed paths. Back in 2012, Devgn filed a case seeking more screens for Son Of Sardaar, citing unfair practices by YRF during the Jab Tak Hai Jaan release. Now, over a decade later, YRF’s Saiyaara seems to have unintentionally forced another retreat.
Though Saiyaara and Son Of Sardaar 2 belong to entirely different genres—romantic drama vs slapstick comedy—the box office is a limited battleground. The momentum Saiyaara has generated could have hindered Son Of Sardaar 2’s opening potential significantly.
